HOW TO FIND A BREEDER IN YOUR AREA

You can start by looking in the Dogs in Canada monthly magazine, in the Breeder's Showcase; or in the American Brittany magazine. Many breeders advertise the aims of their breeding program, e.g. some breed exclusively companion dogs, show, others for hunting, etc.. Some other good magazines with breeder listings are Dogs in Canada Annual, and Dogs U.S.A.. Another route is to contact dog fancier organizations in your city, such as the Calgary Associated Dog Fanciers in Calgary. And there's always the Brittany Spaniel Club of Canada, or the American Brittany Club.
Check out our Links page for how to contact other dog-related organizations.

When we buy a dog, we look for a breeder with the same interests as ours. For example, a breeder who's aiming to produce good hunting dogs probably has experience in hunting. They should be able to evaluate the puppies for hunting instinct better than a breeder who doesn't hunt. This is especially important when purchasing a puppy long distance, without ever meeting the pup or parents yourself. As well, we'd expect their breeding stock to be capable hunters. They are likely to get the pups off to the right start e.g. exposing the litter to bird scent, water & the sound of gunfire. And they should be able to advise customers who run into problems training the dog to hunt, or who are interested in starting out in field trials.

The same reasoning applies whether you're looking for a show dog, an obedience partner, an agility dog, etc.. Find a breeder who's interested in the same things whenever you can.

Don't forget to ask the breeder about health problems in the breed, and in their lines. Hip dysplasia and eye diseases are common in Brittanys. Don't assume that the parents have health clearances; ask for proof of OFA and CERF certification. You can also log onto the OFA website and do a search for a dog's OFA rating ( you need to know information for the dog such as his / her AKC or CKC registration number and registered name).
